At nearly 4,000 feet, Volcano Village is much cooler and rainier than the coastal areas, so pack warmly. Summer day temperatures average 75 degrees Fahrenheit and winter temperatures hover around 65 degrees. Of course, with all the rain, over 150 inches per year, the temperatures can drop, and often does, considerably lower at times. Most people here treasure their fireplaces. Fog and mist roll in most afternoons and evenings; these are quintessential Volcano scenarios. Volcano Village is kind of like a cross between an alpine village and Scotland. An abundance of flowers, ferns, and rare birds make this paradise. Like hydrangeas? This is hydrangea heaven during spring and summer. Never will you have seen such huge blossoms. This is also probably the safest village in the world; you can walk the unlit streets and lanes at night without a care. Don’t even worry about Kilauea erupting; since we’re upslope of the crater, we’re safer than most other areas of the Island. Five hundred years ago, this area was covered with extensive lava flows, but since then, the summit has reshaped itself and flows occur on the southern flank of the Volcano, away from the Village. Sound confident, don’t I? |
